The GIRLS IN TRANSITION groups are for girls and young women who have lost the sense of feeling comfortable with themselves as they move from childhood into their teen years.

There are two groups for Girls in Transition , one for 7 th and 8 th graders, and the other for high school girls.
These groups are for girls who may be feeling:
  • Anxious
  • Depressed
  • Preoccupied with their thoughts and feelings
  • Concerned about attractiveness
  • Distressed about parents’ divorce
  • Pressured by friends
  • Confused about romance
  • Lonely or out of place among peers
  • Withdrawn from family or friends
  • Acting aggressively toward others
  • Unsure of strengths and talents
  • Easily fatigued or having trouble concentrating on school work
GIRLS IN TRANSITION will:
· Identify each girl’s individual needs, strengths, and challenges as related to this crucial stage of her development.
· Help girls develop a stronger awareness of their own identity and internal gifts as well as understanding how the media influences our feelings about ourselves as girls and women.
· Increase awareness of and acceptance of feelings in self and others in order to bolster both self-esteem and empathy.
· Give each girl an experience of positive acceptance of her uniqueness as well a chance to discover she is not alone in her feelings and experiences.
· Create for each girl an experience of belonging and being nurtured by friends that will serve as a template for building strong, positive relationships for the rest of her life.
GIRLS IN TRANSITION will be an open, ongoing group experience that is divided into 12-week sessions. Each girl’s progress will be assessed at the end of each 12-week session, and a determination will be made by the girl, her parents, and the therapists about whether she will continue with the group for another session or transition out of the group.
The fee is $80 per session with a discount when 12 sessions are purchased together. Group therapy fees are sometimes reimbursed by insurance plans; check with your insurance company for details.

What the experts say:
“Adolescence is when girls experience social pressure to put aside their authentic selves and to display only a small portion of their gifts…. Maturity involves being honest and true to oneself, making decisions based on a conscious internal process, assuming responsibility for one's decisions, having healthy relationships with others, and developing one's own true gifts.”
Dr. Mary Pipher
Reviving Ophelia
“Girls today grow up believing that ‘good looks’ --rather than ‘good works’--are the highest form of female perfection. In the past, greater maternal involvement and more single sex groups, such as the Girl Scouts, supported the whole girl, placing greater emphasis on internal rather than external qualities. But in the twentieth century, that ‘protective umbrella’ disappeared, popular culture became more powerful, and expectations about physical perfection increased so that American girls came to define themselves more and more through their bodies.”
